Celebrate Our Faculty

Each of our shows this season will feature displays honoring the work and achievements of our faculty. Here are some familiar faces to many alumni.

Gretta Berghammer
Professor

Professor Berghammer heads the Theatre for Youth/Educational Drama emphasis area in the department of theatre. In addition to her appointment at UNI, she is a Fine Arts Consultant to the Iowa Department of Education in the areas of drama and theatre education, and past president of the American Association of Theatre in Education. In 1999 she founded the Sturgis Youth Theatre, of which she is the Artistic Director. The theatre serves young people throughout northeast Iowa through various education and performance programs.


Carol Colburn

Dr. Colburn taught previously at Oberlin College in Ohio, and has worked for The Guthrie Theatre, The Children's Theatre Company, and The Minnesota Opera in Minneapolis. She designs costumes for theatre, opera and dance, and creates reproduction historical clothing for museum exhibitions. Dr. Colburn has research affiliations with museums in Norway for ongoing research on clothing and handwoven textiles. She has done guest curatorial and catalog research for Vesterhiem Norwegian-American Museum in Decorah, Iowa and the Museum of American Folk Art in New York. Current research and publication topics include dress among immigrant groups in America, and dress and identity in portraiture.


Leonard M. Curtis

Professor Curtis has worked at a guest artist and instructor at Coe College , Cornell College , Grinnell College , Indiana State University, and the University of Iowa . Professional credits include scenic artist appointments at Missouri Repertory Theatre in Kansas City , Missouri , and design appointments at the University of Iowa Summer Repertory Theatre, Iowa City, Iowa . In 2005, Backstage featured Professor Curtis among theatre artists contributing to important summer theatre training opportunities in the Midwest .


Jay Edelnant

Dr. Edelnant teaches courses in theatre history, directing, and dramatic literature, directs and writes plays, and has served as Department Head, Director of Theatre, and Director of Graduate Studies. He has served as a consultant for various state, national, and international educational and arts agencies, has been a Sasakawa Fellow at the Japan Studies Institute, a Roy G. Carver Fellow, and has received the Regents Award for Faculty Excellence.

His research has focused on Vladimir Nabokov, and recently culminated in a production based on his writing at the Ravenna Festival in Italy . Recent production work includes The Wonder of the World, Sueño, Jasper Lake , Hair, A Dybbuk, and Assassins, and guest artist residencies in Illinois , Minnesota , Iowa , Arkansas , and Nebraska . He has worked as an actor and director in the Chicago area and around the Midwest . He serves as a consultant and evaluator for other universities, to the state of Iowa and has worked as a consultant to the Teatr Wybrzeze, Gdansk , Poland ; the Ostrovsky Theatrical and Art Institute of Tashkent, Uzbekistan , and Teatro Fanny and Alexander, Ravenna , Italy .

He is the Past National Chair of the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival and a Governing Board member of the Association for Theatre in Higher Education. He was one of the founding editors of ATHE's national professional journal Theatre Topics .

Edelnant received his B.A. from MacMurray College , M.A. & Ph.D. from Northwestern University .


Richard Glockner

Professor Glockner co-founded and was Assistant Artistic Director of The Actor's Space Inc. in New York City (an off-off Broadway company and actor training program.) His credits as an actor include such soap operas as One Life to Live and The Doctors, numerous theatrical appearances in New York City, regional theatre, film and commercial work.

Dr. Goatley came to UNI in 1992 after teaching at Macalester College in St. Paul, Minnesota. Prior to that time, she taught at a number of colleges and universities including: Gustavus Adolphus College in Minnesota, Trinity University in Texas, and the University of Houston. Her professional credits include performance, directing, and playwriting with a number of theatres: Teatr Wybrzeze and Maybe Theatre Company in Poland; Everyman Theatre in Cheltenham, England; Red Eye Collaboration, Park Square Theatre, Penelope’s Web, Outcaste Theatre, A Leap of Faith Theatre, Brass Tacks Theatre, and the Playwrights’ Center in Minneapolis; and the Burtness Summer Theatre at University of North Dakota, among others.

Dr. Goatley spent two years teaching in Poland at the University of Gdansk having been awarded two consecutive Fulbright Scholarships. She continues to make regular trips to Poland conducting workshops and participating in projects about racism (The Ripples Project), child abuse, and ADD. Her play about ADD, Catching Butterflies, was commissioned by Teatr Wybrzeze in Poland and has since been performed by Sturgis Youth Theatre in Cedar Falls, Iowa, and in Sacramento, California. Currently, Dr. Goatley is Graduate Director of the Women’s Studies Program at UNI and has recently been recognized with a Regent’s Teaching Award.

In 2003, she was recognized by the American College Theatre Festival with a Meritorious Achievement Award in Directing for The Laramie Project. She received another Meritorious Achievement Award for directing The Singular Life of Albert Nobbs. She received a Jones Commission award from The Playwrights’ Center for her play Underbodies. Dr. Goatley teaches, directing, playwriting, feminist theatre, collaborative process, and others. She is currently working on an opera with a Dr. Rebecca Burkhardt in the School of Music, and a book about her two years teaching in Poland.


Linda Grimm

Instructor Grimm's field of experience includes costume technology, tailoring and millinery. She has been guest costume designer and technical director for UNI Theatre productions. She also does historical costume research, patterning and construction for the open-air museum Old World Wisconsin.


Jascenna Haislet

Ms. Haislet has worked in marketing for the Williamstown Theatre Festival in Massachusetts; The Human Race Theatre in Dayton, Ohio; and the Central City Opera in Colorado. She has also worked as a marketing consultant and stage manager.


Ron Koinzan

Ron Koinzan comes to UNI after serving as the Technical Director at the University of Nebraska at Kearney. Prior to this he was employed at the University of Nebraska, Lincoln, as the Production Manager/Technical Director for the School of Music's Opera program. This last summer he spent his 7th year at Cabrillo Stage in Aptos, CA . Additional credits include Sacramento Theatre Company, Celebration Arts, and the Redwood Curtain.


Eric Lange

Professor Lange came to UNI from Vanderbilt University in Nashville where he worked as Technical Director for three years. He has also worked in such venues as The Alley Theatre in Houston, The Dallas Theatre Center, the Philadelphia Academy of Music and the Tennessee Performing Arts Center.

After serving as the Theatre UNI Technical Director for eight years, Eric became the head of the department. He continues to provide some lighting design for Theatre UNI, and has also designed for Indiana State University’s Summerstage and provided lighting consultation for a number of high school, university and community venues in Iowa.

Mr. Parrott comes to UNI from Northwest Missouri State University, where he has worked as a scenic designer and technical director. He has worked professionally at Graceland College, Clinton Showboat Theatre, Central Missouri Repertory Theatre, Maritz Communications Company in St. Louis, and Dinner Playhouse Inc. in Kansas City.


Amy S. RohrBerg

Professor RohrBerg's work as a costume designer has included engagements at Timber Lake Playhouse in Illinois; The Barn Theatre of Augusta, Michigan; Peoria Civic Opera in Illinois; and The Old Creamery Theatre in Iowa. She is an active member of USITT and her specialties include mask making, Kabuki Theatre and millinery.


Tyler Stilwill

Tyler has been the director of the Black Hawk Children's Theatre since 2003. He graduated from UNI in 1993 and went on to MFA in Acting form Penn State University . Tyler will be teaching Voice and Movement coursework and providing dialect and speech coaching for the fall productions.


Steve Taft

Steve has previously served UNI as Head of the Department of Theatre, as Director of Education and Special Projects for the Gallagher-Bluedorn Performing Arts Center and most recently as Acting Head of the Department of Art. Other leadership positions include Head of the Performing Arts Department (Theatre and Dance) at The University of Louisiana and as Chair of the Department of Theatre at LaGrange College . He received an interdisciplinary Ph.D. in Fine Arts with an emphasis in Theatre with concentrations in Arts Management and Directing from Texas Tech University, an M.A. in Theatre from Missouri State University and a B.S.E. from the University of Central Missouri majoring in Theatre and Speech with a minor in Dance.

Although his career has been devoted to leading university academic departments, Steve has had the pleasure of working professionally from time to time. One of his fondest experiences includes the portrayal of Harry Mitchell in the Atlanta premiere of The Sum of Us, for which he was nominated for Best Actor by the Atlanta publication, Creative Loafing. Steve currently enjoys a strong artistic relationship with The Old Creamery Theatre Company (OCTC) working as a director, actor and light designer. The OCTC is Iowa 's oldest Equity affiliated professional theatre located in historic Amana , Iowa .
